في واقعة غريبة، شهدت مدينة تروا-ريفيير في مقاطعة كيبيك الكندية حادثة لافتة، بعدما اكتشف مالك مبنى سكني أن إحدى شققه تحولت بالكامل إلى ما يشبه «قلعة من الجليد»، عقب انفجار أنابيب المياه بسبب موجة برد قاسية.
وكان مالك العقار، جاك نولت، قد دخل الشقة مطلع الشهر الجاري ليتفاجأ بمشهد غير متوقع: الجدران والأسقف، الأثاث، الأجهزة الكهربائية، وحتى الأرضيات، جميعها مغطاة بطبقات سميكة من الجليد، فيما غمرت المياه المتجمدة المكان بارتفاع وصل إلى نحو 30 سنتيمتراً.
محاولة توفير انتهت بكارثة
وأوضح نولت في تصريحات لوسائل إعلام محلية أن السبب يعود إلى قرار المستأجرين إيقاف التدفئة بالكامل قبل مغادرتهم في إجازة، في محاولة لتقليل فاتورة الكهرباء وسط الارتفاع الكبير في تكاليف المعيشة.
ومع انخفاض درجات الحرارة إلى ما دون الصفر، تجمدت المياه داخل الأنابيب وانفجرت، لتتدفق المياه داخل الشقة وتتجمد، مسببة أضراراً تُقدّر بعشرات آلاف الدولارات.
وقال نولت: «كل شيء أصبح مكلفاً، وتكاليف المعيشة ترتفع باستمرار. الناس يحاولون التوفير، ويظنون أن التدفئة غير مهمة طالما أنهم خارج المنزل، لكن هذا ليس أسلوباً ذكياً لتوفير المال».
أضرار خفية وخطر العفن
وأضاف مالك العقار أن المياه تسربت إلى داخل الجدران والأسقف، محذراً من أن ذلك قد يؤدي إلى نمو العفن، ما يستدعي أعمال ترميم واسعة.
وأوضح: «هناك مياه في الجدران وفي الأسقف وفي كل مكان، سنضطر إلى إزالة الأجزاء المتضررة، وتجفيف المكان بالكامل، ثم إعادة البناء وفق ما يغطيه التأمين».
إخلاء المستأجرين وتحذير عام
وأشار نولت إلى أن المستأجرين تم إخلاؤهم رسمياً من الشقة في 5 يناير، فيما لم يُحسم بعد ما إذا كان سيتخذ إجراءات قانونية لتحميلهم جزءاً من تكاليف الإصلاح.
وتحمل هذه الحادثة رسالة تحذير واضحة لسكان المناطق ذات الشتاء القاسي، من بينها أن خفض درجة التدفئة قد يكون مقبولاً، لكن إيقافها تماماً قد يؤدي إلى خسائر تفوق بكثير أي مبلغ يتم توفيره.

Nault explained in statements to local media that the reason was the tenants' decision to turn off the heating completely before leaving for vacation, in an attempt to reduce the electricity bill amid the significant rise in living costs.
As temperatures dropped below zero, the water inside the pipes froze and burst, causing water to flow into the apartment and freeze, resulting in damages estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Nault said: "Everything has become expensive, and living costs are constantly rising. People are trying to save money, thinking that heating is unimportant as long as they are out of the house, but this is not a smart way to save money."
Hidden Damages and the Risk of Mold
The property owner added that water leaked into the walls and ceilings, warning that this could lead to mold growth, necessitating extensive restoration work.
He explained: "There is water in the walls and ceilings and everywhere; we will have to remove the damaged parts, dry the entire place, and then rebuild according to what the insurance covers."
Eviction of Tenants and a General Warning
Nault indicated that the tenants were officially evicted from the apartment on January 5, while it has not yet been decided whether he will take legal action to hold them responsible for part of the repair costs.
This incident carries a clear warning message to residents of areas with harsh winters, including that lowering the heating temperature may be acceptable, but turning it off completely could lead to losses far exceeding any amount saved.
