This incident marks the first of its kind where a data center of a major American technology company has been subjected to direct military action, raising serious questions about the rapid expansion of major tech companies in the region, especially as the UAE transforms into a regional hub for computing and artificial intelligence. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Oracle also have facilities in the UAE, and Microsoft has pledged investments of up to $15 billion by 2029. Unpredictable Operating Environment AWS concluded its statement by warning that "the ongoing conflict in the region makes the broader operating environment in the Middle East unpredictable," referring to additional challenges that the cloud computing sector and digital infrastructure may face if tensions escalate. Impact on Financial Institutions and Essential Services According to Reuters, financial institutions using AWS services were affected by the outage, and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) announced that its platforms and mobile application were disrupted due to a "regional technical disturbance," without directly linking it to Amazon. AWS advised customers to back up critical data and move operations to other unaffected areas. This development highlights a shift in the nature of regional conflicts, as data centers and digital infrastructure have become potential targets alongside traditional pipelines and oil fields, as previously warned by American research centers.
