فيما قوبل ترحيب الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب بمشاركة المنتخب الإيراني في نهائيات كأس العالم 2026، التي تستضيفها الولايات المتحدة إلى جانب كندا والمكسيك، برفض من الجانب الإيراني، تضاعفت جرعة التفاؤل لدى جماهير أنصار عدد من المنتخبات الآسيوية في الحصول على مقعد مونديالي.. ويأتي ذلك بعدما أكد ترمب أن البطولة حدث رياضي عالمي ينبغي أن يبقى مفتوحاً أمام جميع المنتخبات المتأهلة، وأن الرياضة يجب أن تظل مساحة تجمع الشعوب بعيداً عن الخلافات السياسية. وأعلن وزير الشباب والرياضة الإيراني أحمد دنيا مالي أن بلاده لا يمكنها المشاركة في البطولة «تحت أي ظرف»، في ظل التوترات السياسية والعسكرية القائمة مع الولايات المتحدة، مشيراً إلى أن الظروف الحالية لا تسمح بإرسال المنتخب الإيراني للمشاركة في مونديال يقام على الأراضي الأمريكية. ووسط هذا الجدل كشف الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم «فيفا» في وقت سابق عن خطة بديلة في حال تأكد انسحاب إيران رسمياً من البطولة، إذ تنص اللوائح على ترشيح منتخب من القارة الآسيوية ليحل مكانه، ويُعد المنتخب الإماراتي الأقرب لتعويض المقعد بعد حلوله ثالثاً في مجموعته بالتصفيات الآسيوية، على أن يبقى جدول المباريات كما هو في المجموعة السابعة التي تضم مصر وبلجيكا ونيوزيلندا. كما يفتتح المنتخب الإيراني – وفق الجدول الحالي – مشواره بمواجهة نيوزيلندا قبل لقاء بلجيكا ثم مصر في يونيو 2026. This comes after Trump confirmed that the tournament is a global sporting event that should remain open to all qualified teams, and that sports should remain a space for bringing people together away from political disputes. Iran's Minister of Youth and Sports, Ahmad Donyamaleki, announced that his country cannot participate in the tournament "under any circumstances," given the existing political and military tensions with the United States, pointing out that the current conditions do not allow for sending the Iranian team to participate in a World Cup held on American soil. Amid this controversy, FIFA revealed earlier an alternative plan in case Iran officially withdraws from the tournament, as the regulations stipulate that a team from the Asian continent will be nominated to take its place, with the UAE team being the closest to fill the spot after finishing third in its group in the Asian qualifiers, while the match schedule will remain as is in Group G, which includes Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand. According to the current schedule, the Iranian team will kick off its campaign against New Zealand before facing Belgium and then Egypt in June 2026.
