In heavy rain at the Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina, Turkey quickly imposed its control over the match, with Kenan Yıldız posing a recurring threat to Kosovo's defense early on. The match opened up in the 27th minute when Turkish midfielder Orkun Kökçü curled a shot just over the crossbar. Moments later, Kosovo nearly opened the scoring when Visnjic Aslani struck a powerful shot that was brilliantly deflected by Ugurcan Cakir onto the crossbar.

Turkey took the lead early in the second half when Yıldız passed the ball to Kökçü, who struck it poorly, allowing Aktürkoğlu to redirect it into the net. Florent Muslija shot just wide of the post ten minutes before the end of the match, as the visitors maintained their lead and achieved a poignant return to the World Cup for the first time since 2002, when they finished in third place.
