Allegations and Denials Cherfilus-McCormick faces serious allegations after an ethics committee concluded that she was involved in several violations, most notably diverting approximately $5 million from pandemic-related relief funds to her campaign, which she has vehemently denied. In contrast, Mills faces a series of allegations including financial misconduct, campaign financing issues, and inappropriate behavior, but he also denies all these claims. Resignations to Avoid Expulsion These developments come after the resignations of Representatives Tony Gonzales (a Republican from Texas) and Eric Swalwell (a Democrat from California) last week, ahead of an imminent vote on their expulsion due to allegations of misconduct, which they also denied. Moves Within Congress In this context, House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his support for Representative Greg Steube's plan to introduce a resolution to expel Cherfilus-McCormick, following the ethics committee's recommendations. At the same time, Representative Nancy Mace introduced a resolution to expel Mills concurrently, even though investigations against him are still ongoing and may take several months to yield results. Democrats' Position For his part, Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries preferred to wait, stating that his caucus would await the results of the disciplinary hearing before taking a final stance. Jeffries emphasized that Democrats would handle the matter according to the facts and the law, noting the necessity to complete and expedite the investigations regarding Mills before bringing the issue of his expulsion to a vote. While most Republicans are expected to vote in favor of expelling Cherfilus-McCormick, Mills may benefit from the argument that legal procedures have not been completed, providing some representatives with a justification to delay the vote on his expulsion.
