لقي ستة أشخاص مصرعهم وأصيب سبعة آخرون بجروح متفاوتة الخطورة، إثر حادثة دهس مأساوية ارتكبها سائق مخمور صدم حشداً من المواطنين أثناء انتظارهم لتلقي وجبات طعام مجانية بمناسبة مهرجان ديني، على أطراف العاصمة السريلانكية كولومبو. وأفادت الشرطة المحلية بأن الحادثة وقعت في منطقة «ميغودا» في وقت متأخر من مساء الأحد، حيث كان الضحايا يصطفون للحصول على وجبات غذائية خيرية تُوزَّع تقليدياً ضمن احتفالات مهرجان «فيساك» البوذي. وأوضحت السلطات أن السائق، البالغ من العمر 42 عاماً، فرّ هرباً من موقع الحادثة فور وقوع الفاجعة، إلا أن الأجهزة الأمنية تمكنت من اقتفاء أثره وتوقيفه لاحقاً، حيث أثبتت الفحوصات الطبية أنه كان يقود المركبة تحت تأثير كحول حاد. Local police reported that the incident occurred in the "Migoda" area late Sunday evening, where the victims were lining up to receive charitable food meals traditionally distributed during the Buddhist "Vesak" festival celebrations. Authorities clarified that the 42-year-old driver fled the scene immediately after the tragedy, but security forces were able to track him down and arrest him later, where medical tests confirmed that he was driving the vehicle under the influence of strong alcohol.
