لقي ما لا يقل عن 10 أشخاص مصرعهم إثر انقلاب قارب يُعتقد أنه كان يقل مهاجرين قبالة سواحل مالطا، فيما تتواصل عمليات البحث والإنقاذ في منطقة الحادثة للعثور على ناجين أو مفقودين آخرين.
وأعلن خفر السواحل الإيطالي أن القارب، الذي انطلق من السواحل الليبية، كان يحمل نحو 60 شخصاً وقت وقوع الحادثة، مشيراً إلى أن السلطات المالطية طلبت المساعدة في تنفيذ عمليات البحث والإنقاذ عقب تلقي بلاغ عن انقلاب القارب وسقوط عدد من ركابه في المياه.
وأوضح خفر السواحل، في بيان رسمي، أن إحدى دورياته البحرية تمكنت من انتشال جثث 10 ضحايا، بينما استمرت عمليات التمشيط والبحث في المنطقة خلال الساعات اللاحقة.
وأضاف البيان أن سفينة صيد كانت موجودة بالقرب من موقع الحادثة تمكنت من إنقاذ نحو 48 شخصاً وانتشالهم أحياء من البحر، قبل نقلهم إلى أماكن آمنة لتلقي الرعاية اللازمة.
وتعيد الحادثة إلى الواجهة المخاطر الكبيرة التي يواجهها المهاجرون خلال محاولاتهم عبور البحر المتوسط انطلاقاً من سواحل شمال أفريقيا نحو أوروبا، عبر ما يعرف بطريق وسط البحر المتوسط المؤدي إلى إيطاليا ومالطا.
ووفقاً لبيانات المنظمة الدولية للهجرة التابعة للأمم المتحدة، فقد لقي ما لا يقل عن 827 شخصاً مصرعهم منذ بداية العام الحالي أثناء محاولتهم عبور هذا المسار البحري الخطير، في حين سجل عام 2025 وفاة أكثر من 1,330 شخصاً على الطريق نفسه.
وتواصل السلطات المعنية عمليات الإنقاذ والتحقيق في ملابسات الحادثة، وسط دعوات متكررة لتعزيز جهود حماية المهاجرين والحد من المخاطر المرتبطة برحلات الهجرة غير النظامية عبر البحر المتوسط.
At least 10 people have died after a boat believed to be carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Malta, while search and rescue operations continue in the area of the incident to find survivors or other missing persons.
The Italian coast guard announced that the boat, which had set off from the Libyan coast, was carrying about 60 people at the time of the incident, noting that Maltese authorities requested assistance in carrying out search and rescue operations after receiving a report about the boat capsizing and several of its passengers falling into the water.
The coast guard explained in an official statement that one of its maritime patrols managed to recover the bodies of 10 victims, while search and combing operations in the area continued in the following hours.
The statement added that a fishing vessel nearby the site of the incident was able to rescue about 48 people and pull them alive from the sea, before transporting them to safe locations for necessary care.
This incident brings to the forefront the significant dangers faced by migrants during their attempts to cross the Mediterranean Sea from the North African coast to Europe, via what is known as the Central Mediterranean route leading to Italy and Malta.
According to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) affiliated with the United Nations, at least 827 people have died since the beginning of this year while attempting to cross this dangerous maritime route, while the year 2025 recorded over 1,330 deaths on the same route.
The relevant authorities continue rescue operations and investigations into the circumstances of the incident, amid repeated calls to enhance efforts to protect migrants and reduce the risks associated with irregular migration journeys across the Mediterranean Sea.
