The Chilean authorities have succeeded in delivering a historic blow, the largest of its kind, to organized crime in the country, after thwarting an attempt to smuggle more than 100 tons of narcotics, which were expertly hidden inside massive shipments of timber heading to European markets, with a staggering financial value of nearly $8.3 billion. A joint statement issued by the Customs Office, the Public Prosecutor's Office, and the Maritime Police in Chile reported that the operation resulted in the seizure of 1,080 tons of timber that had been stuffed and rigged with huge quantities of the drugs "cocaine" and "ketamine," an amount that could have yielded massive returns for the traffickers in the European black market. Behind the scenes of the operation, it was revealed that the seizure was the result of complex intelligence coordination and intensive undercover investigations that lasted a full six months, during which the authorities managed to track and surround 45 shipping containers coming from the neighboring country of Bolivia, loaded with the rigged timber, before they were spotted in Chilean ports that were used as a transit point toward the final destination. The authorities praised the joint effort of the security and judicial agencies, describing the operation as a "crushing blow" and a turning point in drying up the funding sources of international smuggling cartels that attempt to exploit the maritime routes of South America.
