فيما تتصاعد الاحتجاجات بعد إقالة وزير الدفاع ميخايلو فيدوروف، يدرس الرئيس الأوكراني فولوديمير زيلينسكي إقالة القائد العام للقوات المسلحة أولكسندر سيرسكي، الملقب بـ«الجزار»، في محاولة للخروج من أزمة قيادة عسكرية كبيرة تواجه رئاسته.
اجتماع عسكري حاسم
وأفادت صحيفة «فاينانشال تايمز»، بأن قيادة سيرسكي للقوات المسلحة الأوكرانية أصبحت محورًا للاحتجاجات التي تصاعدت منذ إقالة وزير الدفاع، بعدما أصبح الخلاف المتعمق بين المسؤولين غير قابل للاستمرار. ونقلت الصحيفة عن مسؤول رفيع في الإدارة الأوكرانية قوله: إن زيلينسكي يعتزم الاجتماع بقادة عسكريين خلال عطلة نهاية الأسبوع، اليوم (الأحد)، للاستماع إلى تقييماتهم بشأن الوضع الميداني وإجراء مقابلات مع مرشحين محتملين لتولي قيادة الجيش. وأضاف أن الرئيس الأوكراني منفتح على فكرة إقالة سيرسكي من منصبه إذا تمكن من العثور على قائد يضمن انتقالًا سلسًا للسلطة، مع الحفاظ في الوقت نفسه على دفاع قوي على طول خط المواجهة الممتد 1200 كيلومتر.
وكان زيلينسكي أقال فيدوروف، الأسبوع الماضي، من منصب وزير الدفاع، بعدما قدم سيرسكي للرئيس «إنذارًا» يطالب فيه بإقالة الوزير البالغ من العمر 35 عامًا، وفقًا لما ذكره فيدوروف.
وكشفت الصحيفة أن دراسة الرئيس الأوكراني إقالة سيرسكي لم تأتِ إلا بعد أن توسعت الاحتجاجات المنددة بإقالة فيدوروف، مساء (الجمعة)، لتتحول إلى حملة أوسع ضد القائد العسكري، إذ تجمع آلاف الأوكرانيين أمام مقر الرئاسة في واحدة من أكبر الاحتجاجات التي شهدتها البلاد خلال سنوات، ورددوا هتافات «ارحل يا سيرسكي».
خلافات حادة بين المسؤولين
وقال زيلينسكي للصحفيين إن العلاقة بين فيدوروف وسيرسكي تدهورت إلى درجة أن الرجلين لم يعودا يتحدثان معًا، ولم يكن بإمكانهما التواصل إلا عندما يتدخل الرئيس شخصيًا وسيطًا بينهما. وأضاف: «دوني لا يجلسان معًا للحديث»، مشيرًا إلى أنه كان «يرغب بشدة في تحقيق الوحدة» بين فيدوروف وسيرسكي، لكنه «لم ينجح في ذلك».
وكان فيدوروف قال خلال مؤتمر صحفي استثنائي، (الخميس)، إن سيرسكي عرقل جهوده لإصلاح وزارة الدفاع، واتهمه بالسماح باستمرار الفساد. لكنه أشاد بدوره في الدفاع عن كييف خلال الأسابيع الأولى من الغزو الروسي عام 2022، وكذلك الهجمات المضادة الناجحة في خاركيف وخيرسون في خريف ذلك العام. وأضاف إنه حث الرئيس الأوكراني على إقالة سيرسكي، مؤكدًا أن هناك حاجة إلى إعادة هيكلة القيادة العسكرية العليا من أجل هزيمة روسيا.
تباين الرؤى حول أسلوب القتال
ويملك فيدوروف وسيرسكي رؤيتين مختلفتين جذريًا بشأن كيفية خوض الحرب. فقد رأى وزير الدفاع أن الطائرات المسيّرة والأتمتة هما مستقبل الحروب، بينما ظل القائد العسكري متمسكًا بالنهج التقليدي القائم على قوات المشاة الهجومية والمدفعية.

ويُعرف سيرسكي، الذي تلقى تدريبه وفق التقاليد العسكرية السوفيتية، بين بعض الجنود بلقب «الجزار» بسبب استعداده لتحمل خسائر بشرية كبيرة في سبيل تحقيق الأهداف العسكرية. وتولى سيرسكي منصب القائد الأعلى للقوات المسلحة في فبراير 2024، بعد الإقالة المثيرة للجدل لسلفه الذي كان يحظى بشعبية واسعة، فاليري زالوجني، الذي يشغل حاليًا منصب سفير أوكرانيا لدى المملكة المتحدة.
احتجاجات داخل صفوف الجيش
وأشارت الصحيفة إلى انضمام محاربين قدامى وجنود في الخدمة إلى الاحتجاجات ضد إقالة فيدوروف والمطالبة بإقالة سيرسكي يومي (الخميس والجمعة)، معتبرة ذلك مؤشرًا نادرًا على وجود معارضة علنية داخل صفوف الجيش. واتسعت الاحتجاجات، مساء (الجمعة)، إذ احتشد آلاف المتظاهرين في ساحة «إيفان فرانكو» أمام مقر الرئاسة في كييف، إضافة إلى مدن كبرى مثل لفيف وأوديسا.
ولا يزال زيلينسكي يبحث عن سفير جديد لدى واشنطن، بحسب مساعدين له. وأوضح أحدهم أن رئيسة الوزراء السابقة يوليا سفيريدينكو لا تزال خياره الأول، رغم إعفائها من منصبها خلال التعديل الوزاري الذي جرى الأسبوع الماضي ورفضها تولي المنصب. وقال مقربون من زيلينسكي إنه لا يزال يحاول إقناعها بتولي المهمة، التي تأتي في لحظة حاسمة من الحرب والعلاقة مع إدارة الرئيس دونالد ترمب.

The Financial Times reported that Syrskyi's leadership of the Ukrainian armed forces has become the focal point of protests that have intensified since the dismissal of the defense minister, as the deepening rift among officials has become untenable. The newspaper quoted a senior official in the Ukrainian administration stating that Zelensky intends to meet with military leaders over the weekend, today (Sunday), to hear their assessments of the battlefield situation and to interview potential candidates for the army's leadership. He added that the Ukrainian president is open to the idea of dismissing Syrskyi from his position if he can find a leader who ensures a smooth transition of power while simultaneously maintaining a strong defense along the 1,200-kilometer front line.
Zelensky dismissed Fedorov last week from the position of Defense Minister after Syrskyi presented the president with an "ultimatum" demanding the dismissal of the 35-year-old minister, according to Fedorov.
The newspaper revealed that the Ukrainian president's consideration of dismissing Syrskyi only came after protests against Fedorov's dismissal expanded on Friday evening into a broader campaign against the military leader, as thousands of Ukrainians gathered outside the presidential office in one of the largest protests the country has seen in years, chanting "Syrskyi, go away."
Sharp Disputes Among Officials
Zelensky told reporters that the relationship between Fedorov and Syrskyi has deteriorated to the point that the two men no longer speak to each other, and they could only communicate when the president personally intervenes as a mediator between them. He added, "They don't sit together to talk," indicating that he "strongly wished for unity" between Fedorov and Syrskyi, but he "failed to achieve that."
Fedorov stated during an extraordinary press conference on Thursday that Syrskyi obstructed his efforts to reform the Ministry of Defense and accused him of allowing corruption to continue. However, he praised Syrskyi's role in defending Kyiv during the early weeks of the Russian invasion in 2022, as well as the successful counterattacks in Kharkiv and Kherson that fall of that year. He added that he urged the Ukrainian president to dismiss Syrskyi, emphasizing the need to restructure the top military leadership to defeat Russia.
Diverging Views on Combat Strategy
Fedorov and Syrskyi hold fundamentally different visions regarding how to conduct the war. The defense minister sees drones and automation as the future of warfare, while the military leader has remained committed to a traditional approach based on offensive infantry and artillery.
Western partners of Ukraine and NATO officials have closely worked with Fedorov and supported his reform plans for the opaque Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, according to the newspaper. A Western defense attaché in Kyiv stated that his sudden dismissal was shocking.
Syrskyi, who was trained in the Soviet military traditions, is known among some soldiers by the nickname "the butcher" due to his willingness to accept significant human losses to achieve military objectives. He assumed the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in February 2024, following the controversial dismissal of his widely popular predecessor, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who currently serves as Ukraine's ambassador to the United Kingdom.
Protests Within the Military Ranks
The newspaper noted that veterans and active-duty soldiers joined protests against Fedorov's dismissal and called for Syrskyi's removal on Thursday and Friday, marking a rare sign of open opposition within the military ranks. The protests expanded on Friday evening, as thousands of demonstrators gathered in Ivan Franko Square in front of the presidential office in Kyiv, in addition to major cities like Lviv and Odesa.
Zelensky is still searching for a new ambassador to Washington, according to his aides. One of them clarified that former Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko remains his first choice, despite her dismissal during last week's cabinet reshuffle and her refusal to take the position. Close associates of Zelensky stated that he is still trying to persuade her to take on the task, which comes at a critical moment in the war and the relationship with President Donald Trump's administration.
