Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned of the consequences of Western policies in the Asia-Pacific region, considering that international pressures and breaches of security agreements may lead countries to view nuclear weapons as the "only way" to protect their sovereignty and national security. The Only Solution to Ensure Sovereignty Lavrov defended, in a press conference in Manila following his participation in meetings with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the right of countries to possess nuclear programs for peaceful purposes. He considered that ignoring the security concerns of countries and brandishing power may reinforce the conviction among many that nuclear weapons are the only solution to ensure sovereignty, which is extremely unfortunate but a direct result of the actions of Washington and its allies. Regarding tensions in the Gulf region, Lavrov expressed his concern over the ongoing Iranian-American conflict and its direct impact on the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, affirming that this conflict does not serve the interests of any party. The Russian minister pointed out that geopolitical uncertainty has worsened after Washington's withdrawal from the nuclear agreement and Israel's announcement of its non-compliance with any understandings, which threatens the stability of the global economy, of which Russia is an integral part despite the sanctions. Lavrov strongly rejected what he described as "exaggerations" and Western claims accusing Moscow and Beijing of supplying Tehran with weapons used to attack American interests, emphasizing that his country's interest lies in stopping escalation to ensure the stability of energy prices and prevent shocks in the international market. Meeting with Rubio On the Ukrainian issue, Lavrov ruled out any goodwill on the part of the West, describing United Nations initiatives as "one-sided." He revealed an upcoming meeting with his American counterpart Marco Rubio to discuss the implications of the crisis, recalling previous statements by President Donald Trump regarding the possibility of reaching a peace agreement to end the conflict. Lavrov stressed that if the causes and roots of the Ukrainian crisis are not addressed, there is not much to discuss. Challenging Sanctions Lavrov emphasized that Asia will not be a backyard for anyone, and that Moscow will continue to strengthen its ties with rising powers in the region away from Western dictates. He announced that Moscow and its partners in the region have officially begun implementing the Kazan Declaration, which focuses on: financial settlements: relying on national currencies in trade exchanges to circumvent Western sanctions. Digital partnership: enhancing cooperation in the fields of space technology and platform economies. Energy stability: Russia remains a guarantor of global fuel price stability despite attempts to isolate it economically.
