بدأت قوات عسكرية من فرنسا وألمانيا، اليوم الخميس، بالوصول إلى غرينلاند في إطار استعدادات لمناورات عسكرية مرتقبة، في خطوة تهدف إلى طمأنة الولايات المتحدة بشأن أمن الجزيرة، في وقت يواصل فيه الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب الضغط من أجل الاستحواذ عليها.
وبحسب وكالة «رويترز» تأتي هذه التحركات بعد اجتماع عقد، الأربعاء، بين مسؤولين من الولايات المتحدة والدنمارك وغرينلاند، نجح في تجنب مواجهة علنية محرجة كتلك التي تعرض لها الرئيس الأوكراني فولوديمير زيلينسكي العام الماضي، لكنه فشل في التوصل إلى حل سريع للخلاف المتصاعد حول مستقبل الجزيرة.
جزيرة استراتيجية في قلب الخلاف
ويؤكد ترمب أن غرينلاند، ذات الموقع الاستراتيجي الغني بالموارد المعدنية، تمثّل أهمية حيوية للأمن القومي الأمريكي، معتبراً أن على الولايات المتحدة امتلاكها لمنع روسيا أو الصين من توسيع نفوذهما في القطب الشمالي، كما شدد على أن «جميع الخيارات مطروحة» لتأمين السيطرة على الإقليم، الذي يتمتع بحكم ذاتي ويتبع سيادياً للدنمارك.
ويرى الرئيس الأمريكي أن كوبنهاغن غير قادرة على حماية الجزيرة من التهديدات الجيوسياسية المتزايدة في المنطقة القطبية.
في المقابل، ترفض كل من غرينلاند والدنمارك هذه الطروحات، مؤكدتين أن الجزيرة «ليست للبيع»، وأن التهديد باستخدام القوة تصرف متهور، وأن أي مخاوف أمنية يجب معالجتها في إطار التعاون بين الحلفاء.
دعم أوروبي وتحذيرات للناتو
وقد سارعت دول أوروبية بارزة في الاتحاد الأوروبي إلى دعم الدنمارك، محذّرة من أن أي تحرك عسكري أمريكي للاستيلاء على غرينلاند قد يشكل ضربة قاصمة لحلف شمال الأطلسي (الناتو).
وقبيل الاجتماع الثلاثي، أعلنت غرينلاند والدنمارك أنهما بدأتا بالفعل تعزيز الوجود العسكري في الجزيرة ومحيطها، بالتنسيق الوثيق مع حلفاء الناتو، ضمن تعهد مشترك بتقوية الدفاعات في منطقة القطب الشمالي.
استعدادات لمناورات أوسع
وأكدت دول أوروبية عدة، من بينها ألمانيا وفرنسا والسويد والنرويج، أنها سترسل عناصر عسكرية إلى غرينلاند تمهيداً لإجراء تدريبات أوسع في وقت لاحق من هذا العام.
وقالت وزارة الدفاع الدنماركية إن القوات المسلحة الدنماركية، بالتعاون مع حلفاء أوروبيين وأطلسيين، ستبحث خلال الأسابيع المقبلة آليات زيادة الوجود العسكري والنشاط التدريبي في المنطقة.
ورغم عدم كشف حجم التعزيزات المخطط لها، فإن الانتشار الأولي يبدو محدوداً. فقد أعلنت وزارة الدفاع الألمانية إرسال فريق استطلاع مكوّن من 13 عسكرياً إلى العاصمة نوك، على متن طائرة نقل عسكرية من طراز «إيرباص A400M».
رسائل مباشرة إلى واشنطن
ورأى الأستاذ المشارك في الكلية الملكية الدنماركية للدفاع مارك ياكوبسن، أن التحرك العسكري الأوروبي يحمل رسالتين واضحتين للإدارة الأمريكية.
وقال: «الرسالة الأولى هي الردع، أي إظهار أننا مستعدون للدفاع عن غرينلاند إذا تقرر استخدام القوة، أما الرسالة الثانية فهي أننا نأخذ الانتقادات الأمريكية على محمل الجد، ونعزز وجودنا وسيادتنا ونحسّن قدرات المراقبة في الجزيرة».
مجموعة عمل مشتركة
وعقب محادثات في البيت الأبيض مع وزير الخارجية الأمريكي ماركو روبيو ونائب الرئيس جيه دي فانس، أعلن وزير الخارجية الدنماركي لارس لوكه راسموسن ونظيرته من غرينلاند فيفيان موتسفيلدت الاتفاق على تشكيل مجموعة عمل مشتركة لبحث مجموعة واسعة من القضايا المتعلقة بالجزيرة.
إلا أنهما أقرا في الوقت نفسه بأن واشنطن لم تتراجع عن موقفها الداعي إلى الاستحواذ على غرينلاند، وهو ما وصفاه بأنه انتهاك غير مقبول للسيادة.
وفي وقت متأخر من مساء الأربعاء، هبطت طائرة تابعة لسلاح الجو الدنماركي في مطار نوك، حيث شوهد جنود بزيهم العسكري وهم يشاركون في التدريبات.
كما أكدت فرنسا انضمامها إلى الانتشار العسكري، إذ قال الرئيس إيمانويل ماكرون إن أولى الوحدات الفرنسية باتت في طريقها إلى الجزيرة، على أن تتبعها قوات أخرى لاحقاً.
ومن جانبه، صرّح السفير الفرنسي لدى دول القطب الشمالي أوليفييه بوافر دارفور لإذاعة «فرانس إنفو» قائلاً: «سنُظهر للولايات المتحدة أن الناتو حاضر، وأن الدنمارك عززت بشكل كبير قدراتها الرقابية في غرينلاند، وأن الاتحاد الأوروبي يساهم في ضمان الأمن القومي للمنطقة بأسرها».
Military forces from France and Germany began arriving in Greenland today, Thursday, as part of preparations for anticipated military exercises, in a move aimed at reassuring the United States about the island's security, at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump continues to push for its acquisition.
According to Reuters, these movements follow a meeting held on Wednesday between officials from the United States, Denmark, and Greenland, which successfully avoided an embarrassing public confrontation like that faced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last year, but failed to reach a quick resolution to the escalating dispute over the island's future.
A Strategic Island at the Heart of the Dispute
Trump asserts that Greenland, with its strategically rich mineral resources, is vital to U.S. national security, arguing that the United States must own it to prevent Russia or China from expanding their influence in the Arctic. He emphasized that "all options are on the table" to secure control over the territory, which enjoys self-governance and is sovereignly under Denmark.
The U.S. president believes that Copenhagen is unable to protect the island from increasing geopolitical threats in the polar region.
In contrast, both Greenland and Denmark reject these proposals, asserting that the island "is not for sale," and that threats to use force are reckless actions, and any security concerns should be addressed within the framework of cooperation among allies.
European Support and Warnings to NATO
Prominent European countries in the European Union have rushed to support Denmark, warning that any U.S. military move to seize Greenland could deal a severe blow to NATO.
Before the trilateral meeting, Greenland and Denmark announced that they had already begun to bolster military presence on the island and in its vicinity, in close coordination with NATO allies, as part of a joint commitment to strengthen defenses in the Arctic region.
Preparations for Broader Exercises
Several European countries, including Germany, France, Sweden, and Norway, confirmed that they would send military personnel to Greenland in preparation for broader exercises later this year.
The Danish Ministry of Defense stated that the Danish armed forces, in cooperation with European and Atlantic allies, would explore mechanisms to increase military presence and training activity in the region over the coming weeks.
Although the scale of the planned reinforcements has not been disclosed, the initial deployment appears limited. The German Ministry of Defense announced the dispatch of a reconnaissance team consisting of 13 soldiers to the capital Nuuk, aboard a military transport aircraft of the type Airbus A400M.
Direct Messages to Washington
Mark Jacobsen, an associate professor at the Royal Danish Defence College, believes that the European military move carries two clear messages to the U.S. administration.
He said, "The first message is deterrence, to show that we are ready to defend Greenland if the use of force is decided upon, while the second message is that we take U.S. criticisms seriously, we are enhancing our presence and sovereignty, and improving surveillance capabilities on the island."
Joint Task Force
Following talks at the White House with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and his Greenlandic counterpart Vivian Motzfeldt announced the agreement to form a joint task force to discuss a wide range of issues related to the island.
However, they acknowledged at the same time that Washington has not backed down from its position advocating for the acquisition of Greenland, which they described as an unacceptable violation of sovereignty.
Late Wednesday evening, a Danish Air Force plane landed at Nuuk Airport, where soldiers in military uniforms were seen participating in the exercises.
France also confirmed its participation in the military deployment, with President Emmanuel Macron stating that the first French units are on their way to the island, with more forces to follow later.
For his part, the French ambassador to the Arctic countries, Olivier Bauffre Darfour, told France Info radio: "We will show the United States that NATO is present, that Denmark has significantly enhanced its surveillance capabilities in Greenland, and that the European Union is contributing to ensuring the national security of the entire region."
