يستعد البريطانيون لموجة برد قطبية قادمة من الشمال، مع توقعات بتساقط ثلوج قد تصل إلى 4 بوصات (نحو 10 سنتيمترات) وانخفاض درجات الحرارة إلى ما دون 7 درجات مئوية تحت الصفر، وسط تحذيرات جوية واسعة النطاق.
وأصدر مكتب الأرصاد الجوية البريطاني تحذيرات صفراء من الثلوج والجليد في أجزاء من أسكتلندا وشمال إنجلترا، تمتد حتى منتصف نهار الجمعة بحسب التوقيت المحلي، مع تحذيرات إضافية تسري من مساء الجمعة حتى صباح السبت في شمال أسكتلندا، أوركني، شتلاند، وأنحاء من شمال شرق إنجلترا ويوركشاير.
وأوضح المكتب أن كتلة هوائية بحرية قطبية تنحدر من شمال أسكتلندا نحو الجنوب، جالبة معها أجواء أكثر برودة وزخات من الأمطار والثلوج، خصوصاً فوق المرتفعات، مع احتمال تراكم نحو بوصة واحدة في بعض المناطق المنخفضة، بينما قد تصل التراكمات إلى نحو 5 سنتيمترات فوق المرتفعات التي يزيد ارتفاعها على 300 متر، وربما 10 سنتيمترات بشكل محلي.
تأثيرات على الصحة والمواصلات
بدورها، أصدرت وكالة الأمن الصحي البريطانية تنبيهات صحية صفراء بسبب الطقس البارد في شمال إنجلترا ومنطقة الميدلاندز، سارية من صباح الجمعة حتى صباح الاثنين، محذرة من تأثيرات محتملة على الخدمات الصحية وزيادة المخاطر على كبار السن وأصحاب الأمراض المزمنة.

وشهد طريق A66 بين مقاطعتي دورهام وكمبريا إغلاقاً مؤقتاً بسبب تساقط كثيف ومركز للثلوج، فيما انتشرت معدات إزالة الثلوج لمعالجة الطرق، كما نصحت الجهات المختصة المسافرين بالتحقق من حالة الرحلات، حيث يمكن أن يؤثر الجليد والثلوج على خدمات السكك الحديدية.
انفراجة مؤقتة بعد أمطار قياسية
وتأتي هذه الموجة الباردة بعد بداية عام استثنائية من حيث غزارة الأمطار، إذ سجلت مناطق عدة مستويات قياسية في يناير، مع فيضانات طالت مئات المنازل واستمرار هطول الأمطار لأكثر من 30 يوماً متتالياً في بعض المناطق.
وبحسب بيانات الأرصاد، شهدت المملكة المتحدة حتى الآن نحو 89% من إجمالي متوسط أمطار فصل الشتاء (ديسمبر – فبراير)، بينما تجاوزت إنجلترا المعدل المعتاد بنسبة 11%.
ورغم الأجواء القارسة، يتوقع خبراء الطقس أن يشهد يوم السبت طقساً أكثر إشراقاً مع فترات مشمسة واسعة، قد تعوض نسبياً برودة الأجواء، في ما وصفه أحد المتنبئين بأنه «أفضل يوم منذ فترة طويلة» من حيث سطوع الشمس.

Temporary Relief After Record Rainfall
This cold wave comes after an exceptional start to the year in terms of heavy rainfall, with several areas recording record levels in January, leading to flooding that affected hundreds of homes and continuous rainfall for more than 30 consecutive days in some regions.
According to meteorological data, the UK has experienced about 89% of the total average winter rainfall (December – February) so far, while England has exceeded the usual average by 11%.
Despite the harsh conditions, weather experts expect Saturday to bring brighter weather with extensive sunny periods, which may somewhat compensate for the cold conditions, in what one forecaster described as "the best day in a long time" in terms of sunshine.
With the fluctuations continuing, authorities have urged residents to exercise caution, especially while driving at night and in the early morning, and to prepare for the possibility of continued winter conditions in the coming days.
