أكد الاتحاد الأوروبي أن أسطوله الحربي المتواجد في منطقة البحر الأحمر وخليج عدن، نجح في تأمين مرور نحو 1600 سفينة تجارية في البحر الأحمر، غربي اليمن، خلال عامين من إطلاق مهمته البحرية.
وقالت مهمة «أسبيدس» التابعة للاتحاد الأوروبي، في بيان صحفي، أن مهمتها تكمل 24 شهراً على انطلاقها، بهدف حماية طرق التجارة الدولية وضمان حرية الملاحة في منطقة العمليات بالبحر الأحمر وخليج عدن.
وأشارت إلى أن وحداتها البحرية قدمت الدعم والحماية الوثيقة لأكثر من 1570 سفينة تجارية أثناء عبورها الجزء الجنوبي من البحر الأحمر، الذي تتعرض فيه حركة الملاحة الدولية لهجمات من قبل جماعة الحوثي منذ أواخر العام 2023.
وأوضحت «أسبيدس» أن قطعها الحربية بتجهيزاتها وأفرادها، عملت خلال هذه الفترة على دعم جهود الاتحاد الأوروبي في المنطقة، والاستجابة للأزمات البحرية، وحماية طرق التجارة العالمية، والمساهمة في استقرار وازدهار المنطقة.
وجددت المهمة الأوروبية التزامها الكامل بالمساهمة في استقرار المنطقة وازدهارها من خلال توفير الأمن للبحارة وحماية المصالح المشتركة العالمية.
وكان الاتحاد الأوروبي قد أطلق مهمة «أسبيدس» في 19 فبراير 2024، في أعقاب تصاعد هجمات الحوثيين على السفن التجارية في منطقة البحر الأحمر وخليج عدن، وتتكون حالياً من وحدتين بحريتين وأكثر من 390 بحاراً من 21 دولة أوروبية مشاركة، وفي فبراير الماضي قرر مجلس الاتحاد تمديد فترة ولاية المهمة عاماً إضافياً تنتهي الشهر الجاري.

The European Union confirmed that its naval fleet stationed in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden successfully secured the passage of approximately 1,600 commercial ships in the Red Sea, west of Yemen, during two years since the launch of its maritime mission.
The EU's "EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI" mission stated in a press release that its mission marks 24 months since its inception, aimed at protecting international trade routes and ensuring freedom of navigation in the operational area of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
It noted that its naval units provided close support and protection for more than 1,570 commercial ships while transiting the southern part of the Red Sea, where international shipping has been subjected to attacks by the Houthi group since late 2023.
“EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI” clarified that its warships, with their equipment and personnel, have worked during this period to support the EU's efforts in the region, respond to maritime crises, protect global trade routes, and contribute to the stability and prosperity of the area.
The European mission renewed its full commitment to contributing to the stability and prosperity of the region by providing security for sailors and protecting shared global interests.
The European Union launched the "EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI" mission on February 19, 2024, following the escalation of Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. It currently consists of two naval units and over 390 sailors from 21 participating European countries, and last February, the Council of the EU decided to extend the mission's mandate for an additional year, ending this month.
