في محاولة يائسة لإعادة كتابة التاريخ، عاد برينتون تارانت منفذ مجزرة مسجدي مدينة كرايست تشيرش النيوزيلندية، إلى الواجهة من جديد. بعد أن ظن الجميع أن ملف القضية قد أُغلق للأبد بالسجن المؤبد، وقدم «السفاح» طعناً قضائياً مفاجئاً اليوم (الخميس) أمام محكمة الاستئناف في نيوزيلندا، محاولاً التنصل من اعترافاته السابقة.
ادعى تارانت أن «ظروف سجنه القاسية» هي التي دفعته للاعتراف بجرائمه الوحشية سابقاً، محاولاً تصوير نفسه كـ«ضحية» لإجراءات قانونية، في مناورة قانونية اعتبرها الكثيرون استهزاءً بذكرى الـ 51 مصلّياً.
ولم تجد محكمة الاستئناف النيوزيلندية في هذه المزاعم سوى «محاولة متأخرة لا قيمة لها». حيث أشار القضاة في قرارهم الحاسم إلى أن الطعن قُدم بعد أكثر من 500 يوم من الموعد القانوني، مؤكدين أن:
اعترافات المتهم المسجلة في قاعة المحكمة لا يمكن التراجع عنها.
الملف القضائي أُغلق تماماً، ولا مجال لفتح ثغرات في حكم السجن مدى الحياة.
وتعود بنا هذه المحاولة البائسة إلى مارس 2019، حيث نقل تارانت للعالم «بثاً مباشراً» لأبشع لحظات الرعب التي شهدتها نيوزيلندا، حين تنقل تارانت بين مسجدين مطلقاً النار ومخلفاً 51 قتيلاً وعشرات الجرحى. ورغم محاولاته اليوم (الخميس) للهروب من واقع اعترافاته، يظل الحكم الصادر بحقه «السجن المؤبد بلا أمل في الإفراج» هو الحقيقة الوحيدة الثابتة.
ويمكن القول إن محاولة «السفاح» في الهروب من اعترافه سقطت، وأكدت العدالة النيوزيلندية أن التاريخ الذي كُتب بدماء الضحايا لا يمكن أن يمحوه «طعن قضائي متأخر». لقد خسر تارانت رهانه الأخير، وبقيت أمامه حقيقة مفادها أن جريمته لا تُغتفر، وعقوبته لا تنتهي.
In a desperate attempt to rewrite history, Brenton Tarrant, the perpetrator of the Christchurch mosque massacre in New Zealand, has resurfaced once again. After everyone believed that the case file had been closed forever with a life sentence, the "killer" unexpectedly filed a legal appeal today (Thursday) before the New Zealand Court of Appeal, attempting to retract his previous confessions.
Tarrant claimed that the "harsh conditions of his imprisonment" were what led him to confess to his brutal crimes in the past, trying to portray himself as a "victim" of legal proceedings, in a legal maneuver that many considered a mockery of the memory of the 51 worshippers.
The New Zealand Court of Appeal found nothing in these claims but a "worthless late attempt." The judges in their decisive ruling pointed out that the appeal was filed more than 500 days after the legal deadline, affirming that:

This desperate attempt takes us back to March 2019, when Tarrant broadcast to the world a "live stream" of the most horrific moments of terror witnessed in New Zealand, as he moved between two mosques, opening fire and leaving 51 dead and dozens injured. Despite his attempts today (Thursday) to escape the reality of his confessions, the sentence against him of "life imprisonment without the possibility of parole" remains the only fixed truth.
It can be said that the "killer's" attempt to escape his confession has failed, and New Zealand justice has confirmed that the history written in the blood of the victims cannot be erased by a "late legal appeal." Tarrant has lost his last bet, and the truth remains that his crime is unforgivable, and his punishment is unending.
