The world is anticipating the announcement of a forthcoming agreement between the United States and Iran that would put an end to the war that broke out on February 28, before temporarily halting on April 8 amid increasing questions about the reasons for the delay in the official announcement despite rising talks of nearly complete understandings.
CBS News revealed that the main obstacle in the path of the agreement is related to the Iranian Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who, according to informed American officials, lives in a heavily secured isolation within a secret location, with very limited ability to communicate with the outside world.
According to sources, access to Khamenei is achieved through a complex network of intermediaries and couriers, which makes the process of conveying messages and responses slow and complicated, even for the Iranian officials themselves who are involved in managing negotiations with President Donald Trump's administration.
Two American officials stated that any proposals sent by Washington take a long time to reach the Iranian Supreme Leader and obtain his approval, due to the difficulty of direct communication with him, which explains the ongoing delay in finalizing the agreement or announcing its final details.
In contrast, the White House refrained from commenting on information regarding the whereabouts of Mojtaba Khamenei or the nature of communication mechanisms within the Iranian leadership.
A senior official in the U.S. administration confirmed that the Iranian Supreme Leader has tentatively approved the outlines of the current draft agreement, while Trump expressed optimism about the possibility of resolving the issue in the coming days.
Mojtaba Khamenei was injured during the American and Israeli strikes that targeted Iran on the first day of the war, which resulted in the death of his father, former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Since that time, he has not appeared publicly in any speech or video recording, amid reports confirming that he is following unprecedented security measures for fear of a similar assassination attempt.
Sources also indicated that American and Israeli intelligence information, obtained from within Iranian ruling institutions, played a crucial role in identifying the locations of many senior Iranian leaders during the war.
They added that most Iranian leadership currently lives in heavily fortified shelters, avoiding direct communication except in the narrowest of circumstances, fearing new surveillance or targeting operations.
An American official described the state of confusion within the Iranian leadership by saying: "Watching their attempts to communicate with each other looks like a scene from a satirical series," emphasizing that frustration and tension dominate decision-making circles in Tehran.
CBS News concluded its report by noting that even senior Iranian officials do not know the true location of Mojtaba Khamenei, nor do they have a direct means of communication with him, as messages are conveyed through a secret network specifically designed to conceal his whereabouts.
