رفضت المحكمة العليا الأمريكية، أمس (الإثنين)، طلب الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب إسقاط قرار هيئة محلفين خلص إلى أنه اعتدى جنسياً على الكاتبة إي. جين كارول داخل متجر كبير في مدينة نيويورك خلال منتصف تسعينيات القرن الماضي، قبل أن يقوم لاحقاً بتشويه سمعتها، وفق ما نقلته وكالة «أسوشييتد برس».
وكان محامو ترمب قد دفعوا بأن الأدلة التي استندت إليها هيئة المحلفين في إلزامه بدفع تعويض قدره 5 ملايين دولار اعتمدت على ما وصفوه بـ«أحكام إثبات مثيرة للجدل»، شملت السماح بسماع شهادة امرأتين أخريين اتهمتاه بالاعتداء الجنسي في قضايا سابقة.
وينفي الرئيس الأمريكي الاتهامات الموجهة إليه من النساء الثلاث، مؤكداً براءته من جميع المزاعم.
كما قال فريقه القانوني إن القاضي الذي نظر القضية خالف قواعد الإثبات الفيدرالية، معتبرين أن الدعوى تمثل «تشتيتاً» عن مهماته، رغم أن الحكم صدر قبل عودته إلى البيت الأبيض.
وقال المحامي جاستين دي سميث إنه «لا يمكن السماح باستمرار إساءة معاملة الرئيس»، في إشارة إلى مجريات القضية.
وتعود وقائع القضية إلى محاكمة عام 2023، إذ أفادت الكاتبة إي. جين كارول بأن لقاءً جمعها بترمب في أحد المتاجر الراقية في نيويورك عام 1996 تحول إلى اعتداء داخل غرفة تغيير الملابس، بينما خلصت هيئة المحلفين إلى إدانته بالتشهير بها بعد نفيه الاتهامات عام 2022.
The U.S. Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump's request on Monday to overturn a jury's decision that concluded he sexually assaulted writer E. Jean Carroll inside a department store in New York City during the mid-1990s, before later defaming her, according to the Associated Press.
Trump's lawyers argued that the evidence relied upon by the jury to impose a $5 million damages award was based on what they described as "controversial evidentiary rulings," which included allowing the testimony of two other women who accused him of sexual assault in previous cases.
The U.S. president denies the accusations made against him by the three women, asserting his innocence of all claims.
His legal team also stated that the judge who presided over the case violated federal evidentiary rules, considering the lawsuit a "distraction" from his duties, even though the ruling was issued before his return to the White House.
Attorney Justin D. Smith said that "the continued mistreatment of the president cannot be allowed," referring to the proceedings of the case.
The case dates back to a 2023 trial, where writer E. Jean Carroll reported that a meeting with Trump at a high-end store in New York in 1996 turned into an assault inside a fitting room, while the jury found him liable for defaming her after he denied the allegations in 2022.
