قال عضو مجلس النواب الأمريكي عن الحزب الديموقراطي رو خانا إن مستوطنين إسرائيليين مسلحين ببنادق أمريكية الصنع احتجزوه والوفد المرافق له خلال زيارة إلى الضفة الغربية هذا الأسبوع، في حادثة وصفها بأنها تعكس الواقع الذي يعيشه الفلسطينيون تحت الاحتلال، وذلك في وقت يدرس فيه خوض الانتخابات الرئاسية الأمريكية المقررة عام 2028.
وفي تصريحات لوكالة رويترز من إحدى القرى الفلسطينية، أوضح خانا أن مركبة الوفد تعرضت للتطويق من قبل مستوطنين يحملون بنادق M4 أثناء جولة في منطقة جنوب الضفة الغربية، حيث تتكرر، بحسب قوله، اعتداءات المستوطنين على السكان الفلسطينيين.
وقال النائب الديموقراطي عن ولاية كاليفورنيا: «كنا نزور قرية دمّرها المستوطنون الإسرائيليون، ودمروا مدرستها ومنازلها، وكنا نتفقد آثار الدمار، قبل أن يقترب منا هؤلاء المسلحون ببنادق من طراز M4 أمريكية الصنع ويمنعونا من المغادرة».
وأضاف أن المستوطنين أغلقوا الطريق أمام الوفد واستدعوا الجيش الإسرائيلي، معتبراً أن القوات الإسرائيلية «وقفت إلى جانب المستوطنين وليس إلى جانب المواطنين الأمريكيين».
احتجاز لأكثر من ساعة
وقال كاميرون كاسكي، أحد مساعدي خانا الذي كان ضمن الوفد، إن المجموعة بقيت محتجزة لأكثر من ساعة، واضطرت إلى التواصل مع السفارة الأمريكية في القدس لطلب المساعدة.
وأضاف أن مجموعة من الضباط، بدا أنهم تابعون للشرطة الإسرائيلية، حضرت إلى الموقع لاحقاً، ما سمح للوفد بمغادرة المكان.
الجيش الإسرائيلي يعلق
من جانبه، أكد الجيش الإسرائيلي أن قواته وعناصر من الشرطة تدخلوا بعد تلقي بلاغ يفيد بقيام مستوطنين بإغلاق الطريق أمام مركبات قرب خربة زنوتا، وهي تجمع فلسطيني صغير اضطر سكانه إلى مغادرته عقب هجمات نفذها مستوطنون بعد أحداث السابع من أكتوبر 2023.
وقال الجيش، في بيان، إن القوات قامت بتفريق المدنيين الإسرائيليين الذين أغلقوا الطريق، وأتاحت للمركبات مواصلة سيرها.

زيارة في ظل حديث عن الترشح للرئاسة

ورداً على سؤال حول إمكانية ترشحه للرئاسة، قال خانا: «أفكر جدياً في خوض السباق، وهذه الزيارة جعلتني أكثر اقتناعاً بدراسة الأمر».
انقسام داخل الحزب الديموقراطي
وتأتي تصريحات خانا في وقت تشهد فيه الساحة السياسية الأمريكية انقساماً متزايداً بشأن السياسة تجاه إسرائيل، خصوصاً داخل الحزب الديموقراطي، مع تراجع مستوى التأييد الشعبي لإسرائيل بين الديموقراطيين.

وأضاف: «إذا كنت غير مستعد للدفاع عن حقوق الإنسان للفلسطينيين، أو للتنديد بما أصفه بالإبادة الجماعية في غزة ونظام الفصل العنصري في الضفة الغربية، فأنت في موقف أخلاقي صعب».
في المقابل، ترفض إسرائيل هذه الاتهامات، وتنفي ارتكاب إبادة جماعية في قطاع غزة أو تطبيق نظام فصل عنصري في الضفة الغربية، مؤكدة أن الضفة الغربية أرض متنازع عليها، وأن لليهود وجوداً تاريخياً فيها منذ آلاف السنين.
خلاف قانوني حول المستوطنات
ويعتبر معظم المجتمع الدولي، بما في ذلك الأمم المتحدة، أن المستوطنات الإسرائيلية في الضفة الغربية غير قانونية بموجب القانون الدولي، استناداً إلى اتفاقية جنيف الرابعة التي تحظر نقل سكان الدولة المحتلة إلى الأراضي الواقعة تحت الاحتلال.

The Democratic representative from California said: "we were visiting a village that had been destroyed by Israeli settlers, who demolished its school and homes, and we were inspecting the damage before these armed individuals with American-made M4 rifles approached us and prevented us from leaving."
He added that the settlers blocked the road for the delegation and called the Israeli army, considering that the Israeli forces "stood with the settlers and not with the American citizens."
Detention for over an hour
Cameron Kasky, one of Khanna's aides who was part of the delegation, stated that the group remained detained for over an hour and had to contact the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem for assistance.
He added that a group of officers, who appeared to be from the Israeli police, arrived at the site later, allowing the delegation to leave the area.
Israeli army comments
For its part, the Israeli army confirmed that its forces and police intervened after receiving a report that settlers were blocking the road for vehicles near Khirbat Zanuta, a small Palestinian community whose residents were forced to leave following attacks by settlers after the events of October 7, 2023.
The army stated in a statement that the forces dispersed the Israeli civilians who had blocked the road, allowing vehicles to continue their journey.
No immediate comment was made by the Israeli police or the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem regarding the incident.
Visit amid speculation about presidential candidacy
Ro Khanna is the second prominent Democratic figure to visit the region this week amid speculation about the 2028 U.S. presidential elections, following the visit of Rahm Emanuel, former White House Chief of Staff under former President Barack Obama, to Tel Aviv.
In response to a question about the possibility of running for president, Khanna said: "I am seriously considering entering the race, and this visit has made me more convinced to study the matter."

In contrast, Israel rejects these accusations and denies committing genocide in Gaza or applying an apartheid system in the West Bank, asserting that the West Bank is disputed territory and that Jews have had a historical presence there for thousands of years.
Legal dispute over settlements
Most of the international community, including the United Nations, considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank to be illegal under international law, based on the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits the transfer of the population of the occupying state to the territories under occupation.
