بعد أيام من الإعلان الأمريكي سحب 5,000 جندي من ألمانيا، اعترف الاتحاد الأوروبي بوقع المفاجأة. وأفادت مسؤولة السياسة الخارجية كايا كالاس، بأن توقيت إعلان الولايات المتحدة خطتها جاء مفاجئاً.
واعتبرت، لدى وصولها إلى قمة الجماعة السياسية الأوروبية في أرمينيا اليوم (الاثنين)، أن توقيت هذا الإعلان مفاجئ.. «أعتقد أنه يُظهر ضرورة تعزيز الركيزة الأوروبية في حلف شمال الأطلسي، وضرورة بذل المزيد من الجهود».
وأكدت أن وجود القوات الأمريكية في أوروبا ليس فقط لحماية المصالح الأوروبية بل يشمل حماية المصالح الأمريكية أيضاً.
من جانبه، كشف الأمين العام لحلف شمال الأطلسي مارك روته، أن الدول الأوروبية وصلتها رسالة من الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب وتعمل الآن على ضمان تنفيذ الاتفاقيات المتعلقة باستخدام القواعد العسكرية.
وقال روته للصحفيين على هامش قمة للجماعة السياسية الأوروبية في أرمينيا «كان هناك بعض الاستياء من الجانب الأمريكي، لكن الأوروبيين أصغوا».
وكان الرئيس الأمريكي أعلن، السبت الماضي أن بلاده ستخفض بشكل كبير وجودها العسكري في ألمانيا، في تصعيد للخلاف مع المستشار فريدريش ميرتس في الوقت الذي يسعى فيه إلى تقليص التزام أمريكا بالأمن الأوروبي.
وبدا وزير الدفاع الألماني بوريس بيستوريوس حينها هادئاً تجاه أنباء رحيل 5,000 جندي أمريكي من بلاده. وقال إن هذا التخفيض الذي هدد به ترمب لسنوات، كان متوقعاً.
ولفت إلى أن الدول الأوروبية بحاجة إلى تحمل المزيد من المسؤولية عن دفاعها الخاص. وشدد على أن التعاون الأمني أفاد جانبي الشراكة عبر الأطلسي. ونقلت وكالة الأنباء الألمانية «د ب أ» عن بوريس قوله: «إن وجود الجنود الأمريكيين في أوروبا، خصوصاً في ألمانيا، يصب في مصلحتنا وفي مصلحة الولايات المتحدة».
