كشفت مصادر أمريكية أن وزير الحرب بيت هيجسيث أجبر أعلى قائد عسكري للقوات البرية الأمريكية في أوروبا، على التقاعد مبكراً من الخدمة العسكرية، ليصبح أحدث ضحايا حملة التطهير التي يشنها ضد كبار الضباط في القوات المسلحة.
وبحسب ما أوردته صحيفة «فاينانشيال تايمز»، فإن الجنرال سي دي دوناهيو، وهو ضابط مخضرم في القوات الخاصة ويحظى باحترام واسع، ولعب دوراً محورياً في جهود الولايات المتحدة لمساعدة أوكرانيا في حربها ضد روسيا، سيعلن تقاعده، اليوم الأربعاء.
ويجىء إجبار دوناهيو على الاستقالة بعد شهرين فقط من إقالة هيجسيث للجنرال راندي جورج من منصب رئيس أركان الجيش، في خطوة أثارت استياءً واسعاً بين الضباط في مختلف أنحاء الجيش الأمريكي.
وتزامن توقيت إقالة دوناهيو مع استعداد «البنتاغون» لخفض مستوى القيادة في أوروبا، وفي ظل تصعيد الرئيس دونالد ترمب للضغط على أوروبا لتحمل المزيد من المسؤولية عن دفاعها والحرب في أوكرانيا.
وأصبح دوناهيو، الجنرال ذو الأربع نجوم الذي خدم في العراق وسورية ومناطق قتال أخرى، آخر جندي أمريكي يغادر أفغانستان بعد أن أمر الرئيس السابق جو بايدن بسحب القوات عام 2021.
ولم يتضح سبب إقالة هيجسيث لدوناهيو، لكن وزير الحرب كان من أشد المنتقدين لطريقة تعامل إدارة بايدن مع الانسحاب الفوضوي من أفغانستان، وأمر بفتح تحقيق في ملابساته.
ويتوقع أن تحدث هذه الإقالة صدمة أخرى في أوساط الجيش الأمريكي، إذ أكد ضباط سابقون أن هيجسيث خلق مناخاً من الخوف أثر على الجيش بأكمله وصولاً إلى القيادة العليا.
ويحظى دوناهيو، الذي قاد أيضاً القوات الأمريكية في إفريقيا، بتقدير كبير في الجيش نظراً لأدواره القتالية المهمة التي اضطلع بها على مدى عقدين من الزمن.
وخلال الأشهر الـ18 الماضية، أقال هيجسيث عشرات الضباط، بمن فيهم الجنرال سي كيو براون من رئاسة هيئة الأركان المشتركة، والأدميرال ليزا فرانشيتي، أول امرأة تتولى منصب رئيسة العمليات في البحرية الأمريكية.
وأقال تيموثي هوج، جنرال القوات الجوية الذي كان يدير وكالة الأمن القومي وقيادة الفضاء الإلكتروني الأمريكية، وعرقل ترقيات عدد من كبار الضباط دون إبداء أسباب لهذه القرارات.

This forced resignation of Donahue comes just two months after Hegseth dismissed General Randy George from the position of Army Chief of Staff, a move that sparked widespread discontent among officers across the U.S. Army.
The timing of Donahue's dismissal coincides with the Pentagon's preparations to reduce the level of command in Europe, amid President Donald Trump's escalating pressure on Europe to take on more responsibility for its defense and the war in Ukraine.
Donahue, a four-star general who served in Iraq, Syria, and other combat zones, became the last American soldier to leave Afghanistan after former President Joe Biden ordered the withdrawal of troops in 2021.
The reason for Hegseth's dismissal of Donahue remains unclear, but the Defense Secretary has been one of the fiercest critics of the Biden administration's handling of the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan and ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding it.
This dismissal is expected to cause another shock within the U.S. military, as former officers have confirmed that Hegseth has created a climate of fear that has affected the entire military up to the highest command.
Donahue, who also led U.S. forces in Africa, is highly regarded in the military due to his significant combat roles over two decades.
Over the past 18 months, Hegseth has dismissed dozens of officers, including General C.Q. Brown from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the first woman to serve as Chief of Naval Operations.
He also dismissed Timothy Hogue, an Air Force general who was managing the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command, and obstructed the promotions of several senior officers without providing reasons for these decisions.
