In contrast, American comics have presented a different model, relying on superheroes who possess their abilities from the start, vast interconnected worlds, and major events involving multiple characters within massive narrative systems like Marvel and DC. Despite the differences between the two schools, their success can be attributed to one common element: starting from local cultural identity and the ability to transform it into a global product.
Today, the question arises with ambition and clarity:
Can the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia launch a "Saudi Manga" based on its rich heritage and flourishing present?
The answer strongly leans towards "yes," if the rich Saudi cultural identity is inspired, with its environmental and geographical diversity, historical depth, and solid human values. Saudi Arabia, with its desert, mountainous, and maritime heritage, and the developmental and cultural transformations it is witnessing, possesses a vast narrative material worthy of being transformed into globally competitive visual content.
In this context, there is a need to move beyond some unsuccessful attempts, such as the story of "The Lizard Boy," which did not reflect the essence of Saudi identity or its civilizational depth, nor did it present a heroic character that could represent the Kingdom to the world or serve as a role model. Successful narrative content is not based on fleeting novelty but on building a true heroic identity inspired by history, environment, and values.
From here, an initiative emerges to create a world of Saudi heroes that reflects the historical heritage and geographical and human diversity of the Kingdom, presenting heroic models based on cultural and civilizational heritage:
• Saud – Lord of the Sands (Najd): A hero who draws strength from the desert, reflecting the values of resilience and leadership associated with the history of central Arabia.
• Noura – Knight of the Shadow (Eastern Province): A seasoned heroine who rides a winged horse, representing wisdom, Arab women's courage, and skills in investigation and combat.
• Faisal – Lord of the Sea (Red Sea): A maritime hero who controls the waves and marine creatures, inspired by the heritage and historical trade of the Red Sea.
• Haila – Spirit of the Mountain (South): A heroine connected to nature, who controls trees and rocks, representing the beauty and authentic heritage of the south.
• Hatim – Fire of the North: A hero who controls fire, reflecting the resilience of the people of the north, the warmth of their generosity, and their strong connection to their environment.
These characters aim not only to entertain but also to present Saudi narrative icons capable of competing globally, conveying local culture in a modern and impactful way. It is a step towards establishing a "Saudi Manga World" that combines authenticity and modernity, reflecting the spirit, history, and values of the Kingdom, and providing young people with admirable heroic models worth emulating.
In light of the rapid development of the cultural sector and content and entertainment industries in the Kingdom, the opportunity seems ripe to launch this type of project that merges art with identity, imagination with heritage, and the present with the future.
Today, Saudi Arabia is not just a consumer of global culture but a content creator capable of presenting a new narrative... a Saudi narrative, with global impact and deep roots.
