لم تكن المياه الإقليمية المفتوحة ولا سواحل نيويورك الشاسعة كافية لإخفاء سر «رونالد فيشر» الأبدي. ولأكثر من عقدين من الزمن، عاش طبيب التخدير الأمريكي السابق حراً طليقاً على متن قارب شراعي يصارع الأمواج ويغير أسماءه المستعارة، فاراً من حكم قضائي يلاحقه بتهمة اعتداء جنسي.
لكن رحلة الفرار اللامتناهية في عرض البحر انتهت أخيراً بمداهمة أمنية خاطفة أطلقت رصاصة النهاية على رحلة توارٍ عن الأنظار دامت 20 عاماً.
وكشفت التحقيقات الأمنية التي أشرف عليها مكتب المدعي العام الأمريكي تفاصيل «حياة الظل» التي عاشها المتهم البالغ من العمر (70 عاماً) طوال سنوات اختفائه:
- هوية جارية في عرض البحر: استقر فيشر على متن قارب شراعي ضخم يبلغ طوله 56 قدماً، يتنقل به قرب سواحل نيويورك ونيوجيرسي، متخفياً تحت الاسم المستعار «ريتشارد غرايدون» ضمن عدة شخصيات مزيفة استخدمها بالتداول.
- درع إلكتروني محكم: اعتمد المتهم على برمجيات وأدوات تقنية معقدة لتشفير عناوين الإنترنت (IP) الخاصة به، متجنباً ترك أي أثر رقمي يشي بموقعه.
- دليل التملص من الأمن: أثناء تفتيش مقره العائم، عثرت السلطات على كتيبات ومراجع متخصصة توضح أساليب التهرب من تطبيق القانون والدوريات الأمنية، ما أثبت أنه كان يداري فراره بأسلوب مبرمج واحترافي.
وتعود تفاصيل الجريمة التي فتحت ملف المطاردة إلى عام 2003، عندما اتهمت امرأة تُدعى شيريل جينجيريتش (46 عاماً آنذاك) الطبيب باعتداء جنسي مروع وقع داخل يخت كان يملكه ويرسو في مرسى بمدينة بورتسموث بولاية رود آيلاند، عقب تعارفهما عبر شبكة الإنترنت.
وفي عام 2005، وبينما كانت جلسات محاكمته قائمة، فاجأ فيشر الجميع بفراره، مخلفاً وراءه رسالة إلكترونية أرسلها لمحاميه بعنوان: «وداعاً». وأكد الطبيب في رسالته أنه قرر مغادرة الولايات المتحدة كلياً لبدء «حياة جديدة» وتجنب احتمالية الإدانة، لتقوم المحكمة بعدها بإدانته غيابياً بتهمة الاعتداء الجنسي من الدرجة الأولى، ويندرج اسمه لاحقاً ضمن قائمة أكثر المطلوبين خطورة في برنامج «America's Most Wanted».
ورغم خبرته الفائقة كبحار ماهر وعلاقاته الممتدة، فإن معلومات استخباراتية حديثة وردت للأجهزة الأمنية نجحت في اختراق جدار اختفائه الحديدي. وعلى إثر ذلك، نفذت فرقة ملاحقة الهاربين العنيفين بولاية رود آيلاند، بالاشتراك مع مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي (FBI)، وقوات المارشالات الأمريكية، وخفر السواحل، عملية تطويق ومداهمة للقارب الشراعي في عرض البحر.

- Tight electronic shield: The defendant relied on complex software and technical tools to encrypt his Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, avoiding leaving any digital trace that might reveal his location.
- Guide to evading law enforcement: During the search of his floating residence, authorities found manuals and specialized references detailing methods to evade law enforcement and security patrols, proving that he was concealing his escape in a programmed and professional manner.
The details of the crime that opened the pursuit file date back to 2003, when a woman named Cheryl Gingerich (46 years old at the time) accused the doctor of a horrific sexual assault that occurred inside a yacht he owned and docked in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, after they met online.
In 2005, while his trial sessions were ongoing, Fisher surprised everyone by fleeing, leaving behind an email he sent to his lawyer titled: "Goodbye." In his message, the doctor confirmed that he had decided to leave the United States entirely to start a "new life" and avoid the possibility of conviction, leading the court to convict him in absentia of first-degree sexual assault, and his name later appeared on the list of the most wanted fugitives in "America's Most Wanted."
Despite his extensive experience as a skilled sailor and his extensive connections, recent intelligence information received by security agencies succeeded in penetrating the iron wall of his disappearance. As a result, a violent fugitive pursuit team in Rhode Island, in collaboration with the FBI, U.S. Marshals, and the Coast Guard, conducted a containment and raid operation on the sailboat in open waters.
