شهد حزب العمال البريطاني أمس (الخميس) تطورات سياسية دراماتيكية هزت أركان الحزب الحاكم، ووضعت رئيس الوزراء كير ستارمر في أخطر مأزق يواجهه منذ توليه السلطة.
فقد أعلن وزير الصحة ويس ستريتنغ استقالته من الحكومة، ووجه رسالة لاذعة إلى ستارمر انتقد فيها «الفراغ السياسي» و«التردد» في القيادة، قائلاً: «حيث نحتاج إلى رؤية، نجد فراغاً.. وحيث نحتاج إلى توجيه، نجد تردداً».
تهديد حقيقي لستارمر
وبعد دقائق فقط من نشر الرسالة، كشفت مصادر مطلعة لصحيفة «ديلي ميل» البريطانية عن تفاهم سريع بين ستريتنغ وزميله السابق أندي بورنهام عمدة مانشستر الكبرى، المعروف بلقب «ملك الشمال»، يقضي بجدول زمني ممتد لمنافسة قيادية تتيح لبورنهام العودة إلى مجلس العموم والترشح.
وأكد النائب جوش سيموندز تنازله الفوري عن مقعده البرلماني في دائرة ميكرفيلد لتمهيد الطريق أمام بورنهام، في خطوة أعطت زخماً قوياً لحركة المعارضة الداخلية.
وبحسب مصادر رفيعة داخل الحكومة، يحظى هذا التوجه بدعم ثلثي أعضاء الحكومة، ونصف الكتلة البرلمانية للحزب، بالإضافة إلى جميع النقابات العمالية المنتسبة، حيث نقلت الصحيفة عن أحد الوزراء في تصريح خاص: «نحن الآن أمام وضع تتوحد فيه أبرز الأسماء المنافسة خلف جدول زمني لرحيل ستارمر.. لقد ورط ستارمر نفسه بشكل كامل».
وأوضحت الصحيفة البريطانية أن مقر رئاسة الوزراء حاول إحداث انقسام بين المتمردين — بين مؤيدي منافسة طويلة تخدم بورنهام، ومؤيدي منافسة سريعة تخدم ستريتنغ — إلا أن الإستراتيجية انقلبَت عليهم، ووحّدت المعسكرين بدلاً من تفريقهم.
وأشارت المصادر إلى دور بارز لوزيرة الداخلية شبنه محمود، التي انفصلت عن ستارمر مؤخراً، وعلاقتها الوثيقة بجوش سيموندز، الذي طالب بترقيته إلى وزارتها.
نفي واتهامات متبادلة
من جانبه نفي مستشارو ستريتنغ وبورنهام وجود اتفاق رسمي، لكنهم يؤكدون أن الطرفين تحدثا يوم الجمعة، أما حلفاء ستارمر فيصرون على أن ستريتنغ فشل في جمع التأييد الكافي (81 نائباً) لبدء تحدٍ فوري، واضطر للتراجع.
في المقابل، يرى حلفاء ستريتنغ أن السبب الحقيقي هو إدراك ستريتنغ أن أي فوز بدون مشاركة بورنهام سيكون «مشوباً بالشك» وسيؤدي إلى انقسام الحزب.
The British Labour Party witnessed dramatic political developments yesterday (Thursday) that shook the foundations of the ruling party and placed Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the most serious predicament he has faced since taking office.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced his resignation from the government and delivered a scathing message to Starmer, criticizing the "political vacuum" and "hesitation" in leadership, stating: "Where we need vision, we find a vacuum... and where we need direction, we find hesitation."
A Real Threat to Starmer
Just minutes after the message was published, informed sources revealed to the British newspaper "Daily Mail" a swift understanding between Streeting and his former colleague Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, known as the "King of the North," regarding an extended timeline for a leadership challenge that would allow Burnham to return to the House of Commons and run.
MP Josh Simonds confirmed his immediate resignation from his parliamentary seat in the Mikfield constituency to pave the way for Burnham, a move that gave strong momentum to the internal opposition movement.
According to senior sources within the government, this trend has the support of two-thirds of government members, half of the party's parliamentary bloc, as well as all affiliated trade unions, with the newspaper quoting one minister in a private statement: "We are now facing a situation where the leading competing names are uniting behind a timeline for Starmer's departure... Starmer has completely entangled himself."
The British newspaper explained that the Prime Minister's Office attempted to create a division among the rebels — between supporters of a long competition benefiting Burnham and supporters of a quick competition benefiting Streeting — but the strategy backfired, uniting the two camps instead of dividing them.
Sources pointed to a prominent role for Home Secretary Shabna Mahmood, who recently distanced herself from Starmer, and her close relationship with Josh Simonds, who called for his promotion to her ministry.
Denials and Mutual Accusations
For their part, advisors to Streeting and Burnham denied the existence of an official agreement, but they confirm that the two sides spoke on Friday. Meanwhile, Starmer's allies insist that Streeting failed to gather enough support (81 MPs) to initiate an immediate challenge and was forced to back down.
Conversely, Streeting's allies believe the real reason is Streeting's realization that any victory without Burnham's participation would be "tainted with doubt" and would lead to a division within the party.
